The Natural Gas Delivery System
Metering and regulating stations
Metering and regulating stations ensure the safe and efficient delivery of natural gas to customers. Some are located at the city gate stations or at very large customer facilities, although most are located throughout the system.
These stations reduce pipeline pressures, allowing gas to be delivered safely through the distribution
system within the maximum allowable operating pressure.
Metering and regulating stations also filter natural gas to remove impurities. And if it’s not already present, they add the odorant mercaptan to the gas. Because natural gas is odorless, mercaptan adds a strong sulfur-like or rotten eggs odor that helps people detect gas leaks.
Metering and regulating stations always have a standby system and a shutoff valve. Never open or close these valves. Only trained technicians are permitted to operate them.
